Dollar mixed, gold up LONDON (AP) - The U.S. dollar was mixed against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold rose.
The euro was quoted at $1.0084, up from $1.0072 Tuesday.
Other dollar rates compared with late Tuesday included 102.22Japanese yen, up from 102.14; 1.5932 Swiss francs, up from 1.5833;1.4514 Canadian dollars, down from 1.4525 and the British pound was quoted at $1.6165, up from $1.6155.
Currencies of the 11 countries participating in the euro are no longer traded separately, though they remain in use. Based on euro rates, the dollar is worth 1.9395 German marks, down from 1.9418; 6.5049 French francs, down from 6.5126; 2.1854 Dutch guilders, down from 2.1879 and 1,920.42 Italian lire, down from 1,922.42
In Zurich at noon, gold traded at a bid price of $290.12, up from $287.20.
Gold dealers in London, returning to work for the first time since Friday, fixed a recommended price of $290.65 bid per troy ounce at midmorning.
In Hong Kong, gold rose $4.00 to $291.00
Silver opened in London at $5.22 bid per troy ounce, down from $5.23 late Tuesday in New York.
